First time Mums - What I wish I knew before I had my baby

Hey there, it's Steph, the owner and founder of Malabae, and I'm here to share some real-talk about the things I wish I knew before giving birth. From practical tips to personal insights, let's dive in:

Before Birth:

  1. Colostrum Collection: Consider collecting colostrum at 37 weeks if you're planning on breastfeeding. This nutrient-rich liquid gold is packed with antibodies and essential nutrients, perfect for your baby's early days. Plus, it can serve as a backup supply if your baby needs more than what you have after your first week. We'll be stocking the colostrum collectors in February. - Watch this space!

  2. Onesies with Double Zips: Trust me on this one – invest in onesies with double zips! They make nighttime diaper changes a breeze, and when you're sleep-deprived, convenience is key. You can get some at Bonds, Pure Baby or Target. Bonds baby clothing are on the larger size, and Pure Baby is on the smaller size.

  3. TENS Machine: Coping with contractions can be tough, but a TENS machine can be a game-changer. I hired one for just $70 and it helped me immensely during the first 7 hours of contractions. Check out Mama & I Co. for affordable options.

  4. SRC Recovery Shorts: Treat yourself to some post-baby recovery with SRC shorts. They provide support for your tummy and pelvic floor, making the recovery process a bit easier. Check them out here. You can even get a health care rebate for them!

  5. Two-Story Houses: For those living in two-story houses, consider having a sleeping setup downstairs as well as upstairs. This provides flexibility and convenience, especially during those early days when navigating stairs might be challenging. Creating a cozy sleeping space on the main floor ensures you have a comfortable resting area without having to navigate stairs frequently.

Hospital Stay:

  1. Depends Underwear: Nobody talks about this, but you'll likely have your period for a while after giving birth. Stock up on "depends" underwear for leak-proof comfort. Trust me, it's a game-changer.

  2. Notebook for Hospital: Sleep deprivation is real, folks. Bring a notebook to jot down feed times and diaper changes – it's a lifesaver when the midwives ask for this info.

  3. Preemie Nappies and 00000 Clothes: If your baby is on the smaller side, consider getting some preemie nappies and 000 clothes. Baby Love from Chemist Warehouse is a good option for nappies. Link here

  4. Pack Light for the Maternity Ward: If you're staying in the hospital for a few days, keep in mind that the maternity ward is likely to be very warm. Don't overpack on warm clothes – they'll just take up unnecessary space in your bag. Opt for lightweight, breathable outfits for you and your baby to stay comfortable during your stay.

After Birth:

  1. Non-Stretchy Swaddles: Flannelette swaddles are a godsend for keeping baby asleep. These swaddles mimic the baby in the womb, providing a snug and secure environment that promotes better sleep. I found that the tighter we swaddled our little one, the more she felt comfortable and slept well. Invest in a few – you won't regret it. Kmart has some Flannelette Swaddles here.

  2. Bonds Singlets: Bonds singlets are a staple for their extra stretchiness. Trust me, pulling them over your baby's head will be a breeze.
    Check them out here.

  3. Amazon Nappy and Baby Wipe Subscriptions: Save yourself time and money by subscribing to nappies and baby wipes on Amazon. With deliveries straight to your door, it's a no-brainer. I got a Huggies Subscription
